On the Importance of Hearing Your Intuition
We are all dreamers. We dream of happiness, of a better life, of reaching our goals. We make plans, we put in the work, and we hope the circumstances will fall in our favour. Sometimes everything really does run smoothly, it arranges itself, and we feel we’re in harmony with the world. And other times, no matter how hard we try, everything seems to be against us: one problem follows another, and it’s as if something invisible is blocking every step.
Every day we make hundreds of decisions. Some are trivial, others can shape years to come, and a few can change our whole life: choosing a spouse or a business partner, starting a company, accepting a business offer, moving to another city, taking a new job, changing the way we live, ending a relationship… and so on. We find ourselves at forks in the road, picking from the options in front of us or inventing new ones.
But often we fall under the sway of other people’s advice and expectations, the fear of missing out, the hunger for social approval. We take our cues from people who look like ideals to us, never glancing at the other side of the coin.
Mistakes are inevitable. Sometimes they turn into steps toward future success. But there’s a special category of mistake — when we choose a path that goes against our own nature.
So how do we tell that a decision doesn’t line up with what our true “Self” actually wants?
Our subconscious runs the body’s resources, and it sends signals when we’re heading the wrong way. First it starts putting obstacles in the path: scattered attention, forgetfulness, clumsiness. We end up in unpleasant situations — an unexpected traffic jam where there’s never been one, a car breaking down at the worst possible moment. We’re late. And then late again. Several unlikely events all pointing the same way — that’s no longer chance, that’s a sign.
If we dig in and keep moving against our own nature, the unconscious starts up more troubling processes: constant stress, apathy, depression; the immune system drops, illness can set in. Beyond that — best not to go on. These are mechanisms of self-regulation, an attempt to “stop” us when logic drowns out the inner voice.
But let’s not dwell on the gloomy part!
Decisions made in harmony with our unconscious often lead us onto a path where we feel a spiritual and emotional lift — the sense that the world is carrying us in its arms, that we’re in a stream of energy that runs through us and inspires us. As some put it, we’re “in the resource.” We’re not fighting ourselves or our circumstances; everything is working in our favour.
Here’s to making decisions that match our inner compass — and to walking our own path without doubt or hesitation! 😎
